About this List: Here are the suggested supplies and tools to make the projects in Design to Shine 101 (units 1, 2, and 3). You are welcome to use any supplies and tools you have on hand, as always! This suggested supply list is subject to change based on availability and student feedback.

Unit 1: Materials & Supplies for the Pop-Up Card

Please Note: You do NOT need a scoring stylus or tool for this project, as this project uses dashed cut lines that are built-in to the project rather than traditional scores.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY SUPPLIES:

Unit 2: Materials & Supplies for the Iron On Shirt

  • T-shirt of your choice, size, and color -- I'm using a 100% cotton Gildan® Short Sleeve Missy V-Neck T-Shirt in Heather Sapphire
  • One (1) 12" x 18" sheet (or roll) of silver glitter iron on vinyl (or whatever color/texture you want) -- this can be regular iron on vinyl or Smart Iron On if you have a Joy, Explore 3, or Maker 3
  • Weeding tool
  • Cricut cutting machine (Joy, Explore, or Maker)
  • Green StandardGrip machine mat (12" x 24" for Explore/Maker, 4.5" x 12" for Cricut Joy) -- you do NOT need a mat for the Explore 3 or Maker 3 if you are also use Smart Iron On
  • Fine point blade
  • A way to adhere your iron on to your shirt, such as an EasyPress, heat press, or household iron -- I am using an EasyPress 2 and an EasyPress mat
  • (Optional) Heat-resistant tape to hold your design together (mostly useful for Joy users who have to cut their design in parts)

BUDGET-FRIENDLY SUPPLIES:

  • Shirts: Get awesome cotton shirts for just $1 from your local thrift store, re-use center, or you can sometimes find them at dollar stores.
  • Vinyl: If you got a Explore 3 or Maker 3, there's a sheet of Smart Iron-On vinyl in your box. And Amazon often discounts Cricut vinyl by more than 50%. If you cannot find any iron-in vinyl in your budget, you can always make your design from adhesive vinyl (which is available at the dollar store) and just put it on a $1 sign or frame instead.
  • Weeding Tool: Dollar Tree sells "craft pickers" which work the same! Or use a dental pic, safety pin, or craft knife you already have.
  • Iron: Use the iron you already have at home. If you don't have one, you can buy one secondhand at a thrift shop or re-use center. Or borrow one from a friend!
  • Pressing mat: Use a bath towel folded twice.
  • Total: $5 or less



Unit 3: Materials & Supplies for the Wood Sign

  • One (1) round wood sign -- I'm using a 14" round
  • Premium (Permanent) Vinyl in black, green, and orange -- this can be regular premium vinyl or Smart Vinyl if you have a Joy, Explore 3, or Maker 3
  • Transfer tape (Standard Grip)
  • Weeding tool
  • Scraper tool
  • Cricut cutting machine (Joy, Explore, or Maker)
  • Green StandardGrip machine mat (12" x 12" for Explore/Maker, 4.5" x 12" for Cricut Joy) -- you do NOT need a mat for the Explore 3 or Maker 3 if you are also use Smart Vinyl
  • Fine point blade
  • Polycrylic, water-based polyurethane, or Mod Podge Outdoor protective finish to seal the wood, clear satin (buy in US | buy in Canada | buy in Australia)
  • Ruler, pencil, tape
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Ribbon and rope
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

BUDGET-FRIENDLY SUPPLIES:

  • Sign: Use a dollar store plate charger or pizza pie pan. Or use a round cake board (if you use a plate charger, don't use regular transfer tape -- use something less sticky like painters tape)
  • Vinyl: Dollar Tree sells adhesive vinyl — it's not great, but it's cheap! You can also get single sheets of adhesive vinyl (not Cricut brand) at craft stores. And local sign shops often have vinyl they no longer need and may be willing to let you have some.
  • Transfer Tape: Use layered painter's tape or Glad Press 'n' Seal (both sold at the Dollar Tree).
  • Weeding Tool: Dollar Tree sells "craft pickers" which work the same! Or use a dental pic, safety pin, or craft knife you already have.
  • Scraper Tool: Use an old debit or credit card, or a store loyalty card — the plastic edge works great!
  • Ribbon: You can buy pretty ribbon at the Dollar Tree, or find it at a very low cost at some craft stores.
  • Glue: Use the tacky glue from Unit 1 instead.
  • Total: $5 or less
